Chernobyl accident today:

We are 10!
High Day For Masses

Some good round figures, in spite of certain apparent roundness, look important only for those who directly relate. But it so happened that in the 65th year of the Russian nuclear industry – the key “atomic” event of the year – we also have a date to celebrate, i.e. ten years since emergence of the Nuclear.Ru project. Now, we will try to sum up those years, staying away from excessive frippery.

In fact, Nuclear.Ru came into view somewhat earlier, in December 1998, when the Russian Nuclear Site was launched in the Internet. What did induce its appearance? It looks that at that point of time it was a shy attempt to make out global development trends and, if you like, a feeling of upcoming of the large-scale phenomenon, which is commonly called today the “nuclear renaissance”.

The Russian Nuclear Site was a modest project with new information posted once in 2-3 days, however, in the period of total information vacuum surrounding the nuclear industry and weak Internet (the official website of Minatom of Russia opened just one year earlier) emergence of an independent nuclear information resource seemed a breakthrough.

At the turn of the century, a turnaround was about to happen. In the late 1990’s, just ten and a few years after the Chernobyl accident, experts started talking about inevitable renaissance of the peaceful atom. The White Book of Nuclear Power published in Russia in 2001 uses the term “large-scale nuclear power” as a prototype of the renaissance.

It also became evident that the Internet-technologies being mastered at that time would shortly become main means of communication, moreover, in a cutting-edge technology industry such as nuclear; even in spite of security constraints and poor supply of state-of-the-art equipment at the nuclear facilities...(full story).
